Summary

My 2nd Francine Rivers book is done, and she did not disappoint。 I felt this way with Redeeming Love, but she has such a way in her writing to make you feel such visceral reactions to the events happening in the book。 I felt for every single character and was so invested in the story。There was such complex character development for so many different people which gave way to different subplots。 I also enjoyed the time jumps that occurred to speed things up。 The redemption in the end was great too My 2nd Francine Rivers book is done, and she did not disappoint。 I felt this way with Redeeming Love, but she has such a way in her writing to make you feel such visceral reactions to the events happening in the book。 I felt for every single character and was so invested in the story。There was such complex character development for so many different people which gave way to different subplots。 I also enjoyed the time jumps that occurred to speed things up。 The redemption in the end was great too。 The book did feel long, but not in a way where I didn’t want to read, I was just surprised that I was only 30% in when some bigger events happened。 Highly recommend! 。。。more

What a heartbreaking story! Many fiction books I read, it is easy to remain an impartial observer as the book feels like fiction。 However, "And the Shofar Blew" felt very real and relevant。 The struggles in the marriage, the struggles with addiction, and the personal interactions felt like what I might see in my own circle。 But the distraction of a local church body from worshiping and pleasing God to building an empire (all in the name of building God's kingdom) felt so familiar。 It seems so co What a heartbreaking story! Truth be told when I started reading this book I thought I would not like it but once I got to know the characters and the struggles a pastor and his family could have I realized they are no different then the struggles any couple can have just in a different setting 。。

Good book, well-thought out plot, huge message on forgiveness and being a living sacrifice to the Lord。 Loved the play on Biblical names (didn't catch it at first though!)。 The relationships between family members and between church members & pastors was very interesting and well-done。 The plot line was a "little" predictable, but only insofar as I can usually peg the "bad guy" in TV shows right off, too。 Really nice way of weaving law & gospel into the story line as well。 I think my favorite ch Good book, well-thought out plot, huge message on forgiveness and being a living sacrifice to the Lord。 Loved the play on Biblical names (didn't catch it at first though!)。 The relationships between family members and between church members & pastors was very interesting and well-done。 The plot line was a "little" predictable, but only insofar as I can usually peg the "bad guy" in TV shows right off, too。 Really nice way of weaving law & gospel into the story line as well。 I think my favorite character was the old man, Samuel, (and his wife, Abby)--he really lived his faith。 。。。more

This is a book that I not only want to read every few years, but one that I need to read every few years。 Such truth in the form of such a well-written novel。 I didn't want to put it down, yet sometimes needed to in order to process the truth packed inside it。 This is a book that I not only want to read every few years, but one that I need to read every few years。 Such truth in the form of such a well-written novel。 I didn't want to put it down, yet sometimes needed to in order to process the truth packed inside it。 。。。more

Re-read this。。。 I am still lost in the story。 Every page had me fully engrossed。 The book had the same effect it had on me back then when I read it in 2007。 Paul is like many of us。 We strive to please man than please God。 The lessons are deep。 One of my favourites。

Wonderful book as all of Francine Rivers books are。 About a minister building a huge church but losing God and those around him who loved him。 (Took me this long to read because finishing two other books at the same time)。

Sexual infidelity in the pulpit and church betrayal are two destructive forces in a church community。 Rivers explores the rawness of them both, shedding light on God's judgment and His redemption。 This book is for those recovering from church hurt, broken marriages and families and those who have lost their way--because of the church。 My greatest growth lesson from her book was that there is a beautiful life beyond infidelity and unfaithfulness if we are willing to forgive and reconcile。 Sexual infidelity in the pulpit and church betrayal are two destructive forces in a church community。 Rivers explores the rawness of them both, shedding light on God's judgment and His redemption。 This book is for those recovering from church hurt, broken marriages and families and those who have lost their way--because of the church。 My greatest growth lesson from her book was that there is a beautiful life beyond infidelity and unfaithfulness if we are willing to forgive and reconcile。 。。。more

This is the story of a young pastor who is called to a church that is struggling to stay alive。 He's very charismatic and draws in a lot of young, wealthy and vivacious people in order to grow the church。 In the process, he loses sight of that fact that he is supposed to serve God。 He becomes obsessed with a building program to support the growing membership。 This is the story of a young pastor who is called to a church that is struggling to stay alive。 He's very charismatic and draws in a lot of young, wealthy and vivacious people in order to grow the church。 In the process, he loses sight of that fact that he is supposed to serve God。 He becomes obsessed with a building program to support the growing membership。 。。。more

Excellent book! Francine Rivers is a great storyteller and she proves it again in this book。 This book shows us what happens when we don’t keep God at the center of everything。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 A friend loaned me this book and I’ve had it for quite a while。 I finally decided to read it and I think it’s no coincidence that I chose now to finally read it。 This book was about what it really means to be a Christian and that’s something I’ve been asking myself a lot lately。 I long to be as faithful as Eunice or Samuel and Abby。

This was one of Rivers' less gripping works。 Although it felt long and drawn out, and could have been shorter, the premise was unique and one not often talked about so I kept on with the book。 Details a young pastor and his wife's faith and their call to an old and dying church。 And the progressive downfall of the church as the pastor builds it solely as a monument for himself-completely discounting the elders and attendees of the church who had been there 40+ years。 Also shows the slow decline This was one of Rivers' less gripping works。 Although it felt long and drawn out, and could have been shorter, the premise was unique and one not often talked about so I kept on with the book。 Details a young pastor and his wife's faith and their call to an old and dying church。 And the progressive downfall of the church as the pastor builds it solely as a monument for himself-completely discounting the elders and attendees of the church who had been there 40+ years。 Also shows the slow decline of a marriage and family when one person gives themself up to pride and selifish ambition。 In true Rivers style they eventually meet a crisis point, a conversion turning back to the Lord, and things all work out in the end。 。。。more

Rivers has assembled an engaging cast of characters here to tell the story of a pastor and his family embarking on building a megachurch。 Unfortunately the least likeable and realistic members of this community are the main protagonists。The husband Paul becomes an extreme caricature of a selfish, uncaring abuser that lacks any hint of nuance, making the inevitable about face difficult to accept。 The dutiful wife Eunice is so pliant and submissive it strains credibility。 The message is delivered Rivers has assembled an engaging cast of characters here to tell the story of a pastor and his family embarking on building a megachurch。 Unfortunately the least likeable and realistic members of this community are the main protagonists。The husband Paul becomes an extreme caricature of a selfish, uncaring abuser that lacks any hint of nuance, making the inevitable about face difficult to accept。 The dutiful wife Eunice is so pliant and submissive it strains credibility。 The message is delivered with the force of a tsunami, obliterating any enjoyment derived from its telling。 Strangely the supporting characters and their stories are well written, leaving you with the feeling that the more interesting parts of the book exist outside the main plot。 I found myself many times resenting being dragged back to the lives of Paul and Eunice, to once again be told how bad/good each were。Overall this book misses the mark but you will still extract plenty of enjoyment from reading it。 。。。more

I found this a riveting story, a retelling of the oldest story - ego and pride leading to betrayal and great pain。 There is also deep honesty about how hard rebuilding is, how much confession and forgiveness can ask of a person。 How much willing blindness can cost。 There were many admirable characters and an honest ending。 There are small moments when, unless the reader is a fairly conservative Christian, the words may seem a bit heavy handed and judgemental, but on the whole, this is a very gra I found this a riveting story, a retelling of the oldest story - ego and pride leading to betrayal and great pain。 There is also deep honesty about how hard rebuilding is, how much confession and forgiveness can ask of a person。 How much willing blindness can cost。 There were many admirable characters and an honest ending。 There are small moments when, unless the reader is a fairly conservative Christian, the words may seem a bit heavy handed and judgemental, but on the whole, this is a very gracious novel。 That said, I do wish, that for once in a Christian novel, the evil one would not be a woman。 。。。more

I will warn you this review contains spoilers, but it may save you from a disappointing read。 Francine Rivers is a gifted writer and I find it difficult to put her books down。 In the three books I have read by her the characters are captivating。 However, I am noticing a pattern that troubles me。 In all three of these books there is serious sexual sin。 She is a Christian writer and these books are in no way graphic, but I am wondering if she has a preoccupation with the subject。 It seems that she I will warn you this review contains spoilers, but it may save you from a disappointing read。 Francine Rivers is a gifted writer and I find it difficult to put her books down。 In the three books I have read by her the characters are captivating。 However, I am noticing a pattern that troubles me。 In all three of these books there is serious sexual sin。 She is a Christian writer and these books are in no way graphic, but I am wondering if she has a preoccupation with the subject。 It seems that she could write about the ethical and moral struggles people encounter without always falling back on the subject of sexual sin。 In the Shofar Blew, I was also very disappointed in the doctrine she weaved into her story when the main character receives a spiritual directive that she should forgive her adulterous husband。 This supposed counsel from the Spirit of the Lord comes to her only a couple of days after she discovered her husband cheating on her when she walked in on them and was shocked to her very core。 She had been continuously loyal to her husband, and had endured emotional abuse from him for many years。 His betrayal with another woman was the straw that broke the camel's back and she suffers horribly。 I do NOT believe the Lord would tell her to forgive this man after only two days! She is wounded in her soul and is physically ill as a result of his lies and betrayal。 Forgiveness would certainly be the ultimate goal for her own well-being。 However, it is unrealistic to expect immediate forgiveness for such a painful assault after only a couple of days。 I felt that this approach to such a heartbreaking situation trivialized the seriousness of the sin and the pain that was inflicted on her。 Most, if not ALL, women in this situation would tell you the reality is that forgiveness for this kind of betrayal is a process, not an overnight victory! Yes, the Lord can, and DOES, work miracles in our lives and he enables us to do things we could not do on our own。 His power enables us to forgive。 However, repentance and receiving forgiveness do not come cheap---there is accountability and a price to pay。 To suggest that a woman is required by the Lord to forgive such a serious sin in such a short time is offensive to me。 I believe that when a woman is suffering from marital betrayal, the Lord's first order of business would be to comfort her, not to hit her over the head with a commandment。 I was also saddened by the 16 years this woman endured his emotional abuse, including neglecting her and their son。 Women need to understand the Lord does not require them to accept that kind of mistreatment。 If I had been in her shoes, I would have left him long before the adultery took place。 Perhaps it would have given him a "wake-up" call sooner and he would never have progressed to his complete betrayal of her。 。。。more
